Shape notes
DODECA vs OCTA vs ICOSA XL: which Shashibo should you get?
Magnets, shapes and who each Shashibo body is for — a plain comparison of DODECA, OCTA and ICOSA XL.

Three bodies, one universe
All three Shashibo forms use the same magnetic system, so they connect to each other. The difference is how many pieces and magnets are inside — and therefore how many shapes you can reach.
OCTA — the gentle start
OCTA carries 28 ultra-strong magnets and more than 30 possible shapes. It is the one the maker calls the beginner Shashibo and the perfect travel cube: fewer moves to learn, quick to pocket.
DODECA — the classic
The original Shashibo cube has 36 magnets and over 100 shapes, with one outer design and three inner designs that appear as you fold. Nearly every series and character cube on this site is a DODECA.
ICOSA XL — the deep end
ICOSA XL holds 72 magnets and opens into more than 200 shapes, with three or more pattern reveals per shape. It is the pick for adults and teens who already solve puzzles for fun.
Our short answer
First cube for a child: OCTA or a DODECA in a favorite design. First cube for an adult: DODECA. Already own one and want a challenge: ICOSA XL.
